Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo, Spain, in 1961 and currently lives and works in Milan. She studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and Milan Polytechnic, graduating in 1989 under the mentorship of Achille Castiglioni. Between 1990 and 1992, she served as assistant lecturer to both Achille Castiglioni and Eugenio Bettinelli in Milan and Paris. From 1990 to 1996, she led the new product development office at DePadova, collaborating closely with Vico Magistretti. In 1996, she became head of the design group at Lissoni Associati.
In 2001, she founded her own studio, focusing on product design, architecture, and installations. Notable architectural projects include the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Barcelona, W Retreat & Spa in Vieques (Puerto Rico), a villa in Udine, and the scenography for Monteverdi’s opera L’incoronazione di Poppea. She has also designed showrooms and installations for Hermès, Gianvito Rossi, Flos, Moroso, H&M, and developed the overall concept for Pitti Immagine Firenze.
Patricia works with leading Italian and international brands such as Agape, Alessi, Andreu World, Axor, B&B Italia, Bisazza, BMW, DePadova, Flos, Kartell, Kvadrat, Molteni, Moroso, Panasonic, Rosenthal, and many others. She has provided consulting services for Honda and LG as well. Several of her products are included in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York and other major international museums.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous prestigious awards, including the 2010 Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes awarded by the Spanish government and the 2012 nomination for Designer of the Year by A&W Magazine.
